Neal Francis
About
Chicago-based singer, songwriter, and piano virtuoso Neal Francis has carved out a singular space in modern rock—where heavy guitar riffs meet lush, groove-soaked rhythms and everything is built the old-fashioned way: analog and alive.
His latest album, Return To Zero, emerged after a relentless stretch of nearly 400 shows between 2021 and 2024. The record is a beautifully strange collision of timeless rock & roll and ’70s-era dance music—melding psych-rock weight with classic funk pulse. Created without digital programming and recorded live alongside his touring band, the album reflects both Francis’ devotion to craft and his willingness to push sonic boundaries.
A classically trained pianist since age four, Francis has evolved from in-demand sideman to global headliner—selling out venues worldwide, supporting acts like Wilco and Black Pumas, and performing at major festivals including Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza. His sound has drawn comparisons to the golden era of funk and swamp rock, yet remains unmistakably his own: heady and hedonistic, pensive and euphoric all at once.
Return To Zero is both ambitious and intimate—a meditation on resilience, frustration, and starting over. True to its name, it reflects Francis’ belief that when creativity gets difficult, the answer is simple: remain calm, take inventory, and begin again.
